The United Kingdom, United Nations, and European Union Denounce ‘Monumental Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s Two-Decade Jail Sentence.
The court decision of political dissident and British citizen Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has elicited global rebuke. Human rights organizations and international powers have labeled the national security convictions politically motivated.
Widespread Disapproval and Calls for Release
Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper stated that the 20-year term is effectively a prison term lasting the rest of his natural life. She labeled the trial as being driven by political motives pursuant to legislation aimed at quieting critics of China. Cooper called on Hong Kong's authorities to cease his persecution and release him to his family.
“This outcome illustrates how the vague and overly broad provisions of Hong Kong’s security law may be enforced in breach of global human rights commitments,” said top UN human rights official Volker Türk.
An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, remarked that Brussels “deplores” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and pushed for his immediate and unconditional release.
Details of the Legal Proceedings
Jimmy Lai, the force that established the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was arrested in 2020 the imposition of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities following extended demonstrations endorsed by his publication.
He was ultimately convicted on allegations encompassing plotting to create inflammatory publications and colluding with overseas entities. The collusion allegations were brought under the controversial security law.
A Son’s Anguish
Lai’s son, Sebastien, conveyed that his father fears dying alone without seeing his family again. His international counsel has called him the “planet's most prominent detainee” currently incarcerated.
Sebastien Lai commented that while the sentence was expected, its announcement felt worse than imagined, though it brought some “solace” that the legal proceedings had concluded.
Political Repercussions
This ruling has complicated UK-China relations. British leader Keir Starmer claimed to have mentioned Lai’s case in a conversation with President Xi Jinping in January. However, visible progress towards his release is not known.
Sebastien Lai queried the value of a visa-free travel agreement between the UK and China, saying it felt “rather incongruous.”
Government Reactions
In contrast, the Hong Kong and Chinese authorities welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee said the verdict showed that “the rule of law is upheld.”
The mouthpiece of China’s external affairs office, Lin Jian, called Lai the “primary instigator” behind previous protests and stated the prosecution was “legitimate and lawful.” He urged other nations to refrain from intervention in China’s internal affairs.
A Symbolic Case
Organizations like Reporters Without Borders called Lai as a icon for eroding press liberties in Hong Kong. The organization's director general remarked it was a “somber occasion for those who care about a liberty of the press.”
Given an almost 100% success rate in prosecuting national security offences, Lai’s harsh punishment is regarded as the most severe yet imposed under the security statute.
