Ghostface OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Franchise with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a major gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a character you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.
An Unexpected Return for Fallen Characters
Reports have confirmed that a trio of distinct characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, despite dying in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a brief cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he received the offer from the series creator.
"I remember the conversation. I recall the small talk. I remember him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling very nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Excitement Run High
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a strange shared scenario. The possibility of a self-referential story, inspired by earlier genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
