Chicago's MLB Team Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Multi-Million Dollar Contract.

In a notable move for their retooling roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract bringing in the high-profile player.

Financial Terms and Incentives

The contract features a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to salaries of sixteen million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for winning the league MVP award.
  • $500,000 for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for ranking fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for being named the ROY honor.

The contract provides that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his permission and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the end of the term. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.

Compensation and Franchise History

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a posting fee of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows would also receive a 15% cut of 15% triggered salary escalators.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese-born to represent the White Sox, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 soon, joins a young core of hitters in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a last-place season, finishing last in the AL Central but representing a notable improvement from the previous campaign.

A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, surpassing the single-season record for a Japanese-born player previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His last year was curtailed to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Despite fanning 64 Ks, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. He started playing mostly at first base, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's heroics were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing double that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a dramatic one-run win. The following day in the final against the USA, he blasted a equalizing home run in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.

The lefty slugger is slated to be formally introduced at a press conference on the coming Monday.
