Chainsaw Man Dominates American Box Office in Opening Weekend

Did Sony done it again? Following the box office performance of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in more than $600 million globally, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the $100M milestone worldwide, hitting a international earnings of $108 million during its debut. This movie outperformed the thriller Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its second week in theaters, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring the talented Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).

Notable American and Global Earnings

Directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a straightforward follow-up of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It brought in $18.2 million in the U.S. after a powerful $5.2 million Saturday box office and $4.5M Sunday performance. Overseas, the MAPPA-produced film added nearly $15 million across 46 international territories, resulting in a global sum of $60.4 million under Sony ($43.1 million overseas, $18.2 million stateside). Official totals are still pending from Sony its complete box office tally.

Benchmarks to Other Successful Anime Films

Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment had earlier commented, contrasting the feature's anticipated earnings to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the domestic market in the year 2022 and started with a nearly identical eighteen million dollars domestically. This movie's debut weekend is in line with that benchmark, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar worldwide total presently stands slightly below the earlier film's $166.6M final run. Although it’s unlikely the Reze Arc movie will earn the box office of mega hit the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for the studio.

Promotional Campaigns Boost Success

The studio and its partner the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have skillfully used audience interaction to propel their leadership at the animated movie market. The movie's promotional efforts kicked off at Anime Expo Los Angeles in the month of July with a MAPPA presentation, special events, and Pochita-themed pictures, then continued with a major presence at New York Comic Con showcasing exclusive clips, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. There was even an exclusive fan screening for the public and popular figures too after the last day of the event.

What’s Next

2025 stands as a big year for Japanese animation, and for the studio, which has another animated movie premiering this year in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
