Aaron Rai Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense play-off following a topsy-turvy final round of play.
Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from just over eight foot to clinch the victory, repeating his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai entered the final round with a single stroke lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.
Playoff Climax
This set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to take the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in winnings.

Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to do, finishing one shot behind in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was his best-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdies of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Mansell hit an superb final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
